DURATION: 8 days / 7 nights

SUP travel at its finest, this stand up paddle boarding and dive holiday involves a liveaboard experience exploring Komodo National Park. A Bucket List adventure and journey of discovery, we'll be exploring one of the most highly regarded conservation areas in the world. Home to giant manta rays, Komodo dragons, friendly turtles and insanely beautiful corals, SUP & Dive Komodo will appeal to the active traveller seeking a destination that's truly off the beaten path.

SUP Wilderness Adventures Komodo

Spectacular Komodo National Park is located in the center of the Indonesian archipelago, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. Established in 1980 to conserve the unique Komodo dragon, the Park has expanded to protect the terrestrial and marine biodiversity of this remarkable place.

In 1986, the Park was declared a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Both of these designations indicate the Park's biological importance and qualify Komodo as a true Bucket List destination.

Komodo National Park comprises three major islands (Komodo, Rinca and Padar), as well as numerous smaller islands extending across an area of 1817 km. As well as being home to the Komodo dragon, the Park provides refuge for many other terrestrial species, such as buffalo, deer, monkeys and an endemic species of rat.

Komodo National Park preserves one of the world's richest marine environments. It features over 260 species of reef building corals, 70 species of sponges, and more than 1000 species of marine fish. Giant manta are commonly seen, as are turtles, dolphins, dugong and whales.

Liveaboard Komodo

Dive, SUP, snorkel, hike during the's totally up to you how little or how much you do. Just be sure to have a camera as the scenery is nothing short of spectacular!

We've booked to explore the marine park aboard a swish vessel called the Empress II. Cabins have air conditioning, there are three heads and even a cinema screen on board.

At night, laze on deck under a starry sky and listen to traditional folk tales being recounted, before planning the next day of fun. Although this is a dive boat, (13 dives are included for certified divers),  snorkellers and paddlers will find that their desires are satisfied to overflowing as well.

The crew will take us to hidden coves, uninhabited islands and reefs where the coral gardens are crowded with turtles and manta rays. Those with SUPs can paddle to their heart's content and in the evenings, meet on the water for sunset SUP & Sip sessions.

Those who are keen to encounter Komodo Dragons will get their chance when we visit Rinca or Komodo Island and do a half day hike. You're also likely to see deer,  wild boar and monkeys while you follow the ranger across the desolate looking island to a look out across the sea.

Four nights will be spent aboard our vessel, with one night prio and two nights after, spent at wonderful resort in Labuan Bajo.

On the afternoon, we bid farewell and return you to the airport to catch a flight back to Bali, Lombok or elsewhere.

Ocean-borne trash is a serious issue for much of the world. Indonesia is both the recipient and the creator of the problem; with plastic trash seen throughout Komodo National Park.

For this adventure we'll be joining forces with local volunteer group Trash Hero. They organise weekly clean ups around Komodo and run an educational program to encourage recycling. Although much of our work will occur in far-flung places, we'll be bringing the trash we collect back into town for proper sorting and disposal. In exchange for their assistance, a cash donation will be made to Trash Hero to help cover their operational costs.

In 2017, we collected 149kg of plastic trash from a beach frequently visited by tourists. The majority of that trash was there because of the tourists, so we set about cleaning up. 90 minutes later, the number of volunteers had swelled from 9 to 20 and 14 large sacks of rubbish stood ready for transport.

In 2018, the number of participants started at 16 and soon swelled to 30 people. Our cleanup took half an hour and we collected 12 sacks full of plastic waste, bottles and fishing nets.

We've also partnered with Manta Watch, so the night before we depart, you'll receive a briefing from them before attempting to secure new Manta IDs for the database. Who knows! You may even get to name a manta that you're the first to ID!
