SUP & DIVE KOMODO, INDONESIA 2019
DATE: 4 - 11 Sept 2019
DURATION: 8 days / 7 nights
This is an conservation-focused paddle board adventure for lovers of nature who want to learn about restoring and protecting coral reef ecosystems. We stay at a boutique resort in Labuan Bajo to meet with local conservation partners and receive training in manta identification and coral regeneration. We then board our spacious live aboard boat and set off to explore the park. This is your chance to paddle, snorkel and explore with both manta rays and turtles in the wild.
Spectacular Komodo National Park is located in the center of the Indonesian archipelago, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores. Established in 1980 to conserve the unique Komodo dragon, the Park has expanded to protect the terrestrial and marine biodiversity of this remarkable place.
In 1986, the Park was declared a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Both of these designations indicate the Park's biological importance and qualify Komodo as a true Bucket List destination.
Komodo National Park comprises three major islands (Komodo, Rinca and Padar), as well as numerous smaller islands extending across an area of 1817 km. As well as being home to the Komodo dragon, the Park provides refuge for many other terrestrial species, such as buffalo, deer, monkeys and an endemic species of rat.
Komodo National Park preserves one of the world's richest marine environments. It features over 260 species of reef building corals, 70 species of sponges, and more than 1000 species of marine fish. Giant manta are commonly seen, as are turtles, dolphins, dugong and whales.
SUP, snorkel, hike or hang in a hammock during the day...it's totally up to you how little or how much you do! Just be sure to have a camera at-hand as the sunsets are nothing short of spectacular!
We've booked a spacious 5-cabin teak boat that can fix 15 people but we’ll only put 10 guests on it. Cabins have air conditioning, there are three heads, plus hammocks and bean bags galore!
Each evening, we grab a beer and war=tch theas the sky turns blood read, Then, it’s time for dinner and planning the next day of fun.
The crew will take us to hidden coves, uninhabited islands and reefs where the coral gardens are crowded with tropical fish and manta rays. As we have the whole boat for ourselves, we can go where we want and stay as long as the turtles care to chill with us.
Those with SUPs can paddle to their heart's content or surf on their SUP behind the speedboat.
Those who are keen to encounter Komodo Dragons will get their chance when we visit Rinca Island and do a half day hike. You're also likely to see deer, wild boar and monkeys while you follow the ranger across the desolate looking island to a look out across the sea.

You'll get to do a full day workshop with Ocean Quest Global; learning how to grow, plant and save coral reefs! The full day coral gardening workshop will impart the basic techniques of coral rehabilitation and conservation.
By taking this hands-on approach and increasing your knowledge of coral health and rehabilitation, we believe you’ll get more from the experience of paddling across or snorkelling over one of the most vibrant coral ecosystems in the world. You’ll also be supporting the work of one of our local project partners: Ocean Quest Global.
You'll also get to meet the Manta Watch team and learn how to photograph and identify the manta rays you're likely to encounter.
Each year, we also undertake a beach clean on one of the most visited islands in the Park, and give sponsorship funding support to the local chapter of Trash Hero, in exchange for their disposal of the waste we bring back to port.
In 2017, we collected 149kg of plastic trash from a beach frequently visited by tourists. The majority of that trash was there because of the tourists, so we set about cleaning up. 90 minutes later, the number of volunteers had swelled from 9 to 20 and 14 large sacks of rubbish stood ready for transport.
In 2018, the number of participants started at 16 and soon swelled to 30 people. Our cleanup took half an hour and we collected 12 sacks full of plastic waste, bottles and fishing nets. Let’s see what we can achieve in 2019!
