Join us for a week of luxury, island-hopping SUP exploration around Koh Samui in Thailand. This island has long been famed for its palm-fringed white sands, forested interior, waterfalls and remarkable marine park. Dozens of tiny islets are lapped by warm Gulf of Thailand waters within which the diving attractions are world-renowned.

During this week-long paddle boarding adventure, we’ll be basing ourselves at one of the most luxurious resorts on the island. Being on the coast, the hot weather won’t be an issue as we’ll be in or on the sea every day. If the wind picks up, we’ll simply head inland to bathe in stunning waterfalls and zip-line through the canopy in the jungle.

While there, we’ll help out at bona-fide elephant sanctuary where the residents have been rescued from the tourism trade and now get to spend their days in play. We’ll make the elephants an over-sized meal, then hand-feed it to them before joining them for a stroll through the grounds.

As part of the more self-indulgent activities, daily cocktails will be served by the pool, a full body massage is included and we’ll even do a Thai cooking class so we can replicate our favourite foods once we return home.

The real draw for Koh Samui however is the spectacular Ang Thong Marine National Park, which is made up of 42 tiny islands. The protected environment attracts whale sharks, turtles, rays and all manner of tropical fish as it boasts some of the prettiest corals in the area. We’ll be taking plenty of boat trips to explore the park, islands and coastline with our boards. Those who are dive-certified may do so while others can either snorkel or do an Open Water course while they’re here.

We’ll also hop across to neighbouring Koh Tao for the day to check out it’s attractions and swim in its crystal-clear seas. So, if you’re ready for a laid-back luxury SUPcation, this is the trip for you!

Koh Samui lies in the Gulf of Thailand off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus. It's known for its palm-fringed beaches, coconut groves and dense, mountainous rain-forest, plus luxury resorts and posh spas. Koh Samui is Thailand's second-largest island after Phuket, with an area of 228.7 km2, a population of over 63,000. It has an international airport, making getting there a simple affair.

The island measures some 25 km at its widest point. To the north are the populated resort islands of Ko Pha-ngan, Ko Tao, and Ko Nang Yuan. Close to Bangrak in northeast Samui is the small uninhabited island of Ko Som, and to the northeast of Chaweng is the tiny Ko Matlang. To the south are Ko Taen and Ko Matsum, each of which have small tourist facilities. To the far west are 44 other islands which together compose Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park which is accessible by a day-trip boat tour from Ko Samui.

The central part of Ko Samui is mostly tropical jungle, including its largest mountain, Khao Pom, peaking at 635 meters. The various lowland and coastal areas are connected by Route 4169, which is a 51 kilometre–long road, encircling the island. On the west coast of the island is the original capital, Nathon, which still houses many government offices, as well as two of the island's five major piers.

The elephants at Samui Elephant Haven have been rescued from street begging, elephant riding, and performing for tourists in shows. During their time working, many of them sustained physical and psychological injuries, so the sanctuary gives the elephants a second chance at life.

Samui Elephant Haven opened to guests in 2018, with the objective of providing a safe haven for rescued elephants on Koh Samui. The inspiration for the project comes from the work of renowned elephant rights advocate, Sangduean ‘Lek’ Chailert. Guided by Lek’s ‘Saddle Off’ model, they have embraced this evolution in elephant tourism; offering guests an unforgettable experience learning about elephants while feeding and observing their spontaneous behaviour.

NB: They do not allow elephant bathing nor riding, but you will have the opportunity to prepare meals for the elephants, then feed and walk them while visiting.

While in Koh Samui, we will also participate in a local beach-clean with the local chapter of Trash Hero, so that we’re ensuring we leave the island in a better state than it was when we arrived. We’ll also be planting mangrove seedlings to help offset our flight emissions.
