SUP SAMOA JUNE 2020
DATE: 23-30 June 2020
DURATION: 7 days / 6 nights
Exotic, under-developed, unpolluted, tropical, Samoa is a country that’s been off the tourism radar for far too long. This paddle boarding vacation is based in the south of the main island, where the white sand beaches and palm trees are picture-postcard perfect and begging to be explored.
Samoa was born out of volcanic activity, which has given the islands a rugged appeal. The intense natural beauty of this small South Pacific nation is characterised by iridescent seas, jade jungles and spectacular waterfalls, yet for some reason the country remains devoid of mega-resorts and flashy attractions.
The main island where we’ll be based is called Upolu and it’s where the capital city (Apria) is located. It’s a hot, bustling little city with colourful local markets and a marina right in the heart of town.
The coast is bejewelled with white sand beaches, blue lagoons and magical swimming holes. There are countless bays and coral reefs that beg exploration by paddle board and both surfing and diving add to the allure. If you want a change of pace, there are numerous tracks that lead deep through lush rain-forests to a number or rivers and dramatically beautiful waterfalls that seem to cascade from the heavens above.
Geographically and culturally, Samoa is considered the heart of Polynesia. and although the missionaries of the 1800s were enormously influential, the people still clung to Fa’a Samoa (the Samoan Way), making it one of the most authentic and traditional of all Pacific societies. The entire country has less than 200,000 residents who tend to be pretty chilled-out despite the year-round balmy climes. They’re sports-mad, so expect to see locals indulging in a game of footie or kirikiti (the local version of cricket) , which you’ll find you’re generally welcome to join in.
If you’d like to donate to one of the local projects we support in Samoa, please feel free to bring dog/ cat toys, vet supplies, worming tablets, flea collars, etc. We’ll be visiting the shelter where stray cats and dogs are cared for and will supply these to the clinic staff to help with the welfare of the animals.
