SUP POOR KNIGHTS, NZ 2019

This short-break getaway is ideal for those wishing to escape the chaos leading up to Christmas and reconnect with your family/ friends instead. We’ve got a three-night escape planned that will have you exploring some of New Zealand’s most spectacular offshore islands, cave-paddling, hiking coastal forest trails, and bathing in rock pools fit for mermaids. If you’re lucky - which we usually are - you may even get to paddle with dolphins and seals!
90-minutes drive north of Auckland, New Zealand, the Tutukaka Coast offers infinite opportunities for paddlers who value adventure and exploration. National Geographic rated this area as one the top three coastlines in the world, as it’s characterised by powdery white sand beaches, steep cliffs, forested offshore islands and deeply-cut natural harbours.
The many cliff faces of the Tutukaka Coast boast jaw-dropping views, terrestrial and sea bird watching, epic views for landscape photographers, caves and clear waters that attract an abundance of marine life. Coastal estuaries and brim full with life and – regardless of which way the wind may be blowing - there’s nearly always a surf-able wave or calm waterway that’s perfect for paddling and admiring the wilderness areas that abound.
The Poor Knights Islands are what remains of a ~10 million-year-old volcano and the archipelago has been separated from NZ’s mainland for longer than any other islands in NZ. Because of this, species divergence has resulted in island gigantism and endemic species that are found nowhere else in the country.
DAY ONE - Arrive in Tutukaka by 5pm
Once at you’re accommodation, we’ll greet you with some snacks and refreshments before heading out for some SUP Yoga and a paddle along the coast (weather permitting). Those who are new to SUP may get some lessons in at this time.
We’ll then return to the accommodation to get to know each other a little over a traditional BBQ and a glass of Kiwi wine as the sun goes down and users in a sky filled with stars.
DAY TWO - Poor Knights Islands
After breakfast, we’ll collect you from your accommodation and transport you to our launch, which is moored at the marina in Tutukaka harbour.
Departure will be at 9am (so we meet the boat at 8:30am) and it takes an hour to motor the islands.This allows time to sip a cup of tea/ coffee while keeping eyes peeled for dolphins or whales, which are often seen in these parts.
Once at the Islands, we’ll allocate boards to paddlers and spend the next few hours exploring the many sea caves and secluded bays where sting rays, seals and harmless jelly fish are commonly encountered,
For those who care to join us, we’ll do some SUP Yoga in one of teh caves; a truly incredible expedience.
Lunch will be served on board and is an assortment of fresh, organic fruits, salads, cheeses and breads, as well as home-baked cake (if you’re fast!).
There is also a hot shower on board if the water’s chill has forced you to take a break from snorkelling among the kelp beds and along the rocky shoreline.
We’ll take the boat inside of one of the largest caves and share with you local folk lore and archaeological facts that make this part of New Zealand so rare and unique.
DAY THREE - Coastal paddling
Weather will dictate the best paddle spot along the coast to explore and if necessary, we can head inland to paddle one of the rivers that pass through native bush land before emptying into the sea.
We’ll take a packed lunch and hot drinks with us and show you some of the prettiest secluded white-sand beaches; presided over by densely forested hills with escarpments that drop dramatically to the sea below.
The coastal walks in these parts offer epic views and there are SUP-surfing spots that you’re welcome to try.
Those who enjoy rock-pooling, can climb a short, steep track (aided by a rope), that will see you “discover” the magic of the Mermaid Pools on the other side. These enormous rock pools are home to schools of tiny fish, harmless molluscs and crustaceans. They waters are seep enough to dive in to, but clear and refreshing for a swim.
If there’s enough wind in the afternoon, we can put up the power kites and anyone who’s keen to learn the fundamentals of kitesurfing can have a go!
We finish the tour with a bit of SUP Yoga before heading back to the accommodation and dinner at your leisure.
DAY FOUR - Local Exploring
The last day in Tutukaka offers the chance to go for a horse ride (extra cost), a dive at the Poor Knights (extra cost), fishing (extra cost), or a half day hike along the Tane Moana (giant Kauri) Walkway. If you decide which activity you’d like to enjoy, we’ll make all the necessary arrangements for you.

GETTING THERE & AWAY
Tutukaka is 3-hr drive north of Auckland. Flights from Auckland to to Whangarei take 40-minutes and cost approximately NZ$130. A shuttle can be arranged (at extra cost) to transport you from Whangarei to Tutukaka, 30 minutes away.
